Greg Heiar lands head coaching position at New Mexico State University
NICEVILLE, FL - From the day Greg Heiar stepped on campus, he was on a mission. The mission was to invest all he had into getting the Northwest Florida State College men's basketball program back to national prominence, develop players on and off the court, integrate the program into the community, and win at a high level. After just one season, all of those goals were emphatically checked off, culminating with winning the NJCAA National Championship just over a week ago and earning National Coach of the Year honors.
After all of that success, it didn't take long for people to take notice, especially those who were in search of a new head coach. A week after cutting down the nets, those accomplishments landed Coach Heiar an opportunity he could not refuse. On Monday, Greg Heiar was announced as the next head coach for New Mexico State University, ending his successful time with the Raiders after leading the largest turnaround in NJCAA history.
Heiar inherited a program that had just won six games the previous season and was in need of a total roster overhaul. Apart from forward Fallou Diagne, Heiar brought in an entirely new team after taking the reins. Over the course of the next 10 months, Coach Heiar transformed the program, leading them to an astonishing 31 wins, a Panhandle Conference title, and the NJCAA National Championship.
The Raider community is very grateful for Coach Heiar and his impact on the program and certainly wish him well at New Mexico State University.
Northwest Florida State College will now turn their attention to finding the next head men's basketball coach for the Raiders. The search will begin immediately.
