Raiders Blank Tallahassee State in Extra-Inning Pitcher's Duel
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In a battle dominated by stellar pitching, Northwest Florida State used a late offensive spark to pull away with a 3-0 victory over Tallahassee State on Wednesday afternoon.
Cailyn Heyl continued her dominant season in the circle, tossing seven shutout innings for the Raiders. The sophomore right-hander scattered five hits, struck out five, and navigated four walks to keep the Eagles scoreless. The win marked Heyl's 25th of the season and lowered her ERA to a remarkable 0.86.
After seven innings of scoreless softball, the Raiders broke through in the top of the eighth. Sister Arnold delivered the decisive blow—a two-run homer to center field—putting Northwest Florida on the board. An error later in the inning added an insurance run, giving the Raiders a comfortable cushion.
Mallory Baker closed out the win with a perfect bottom half of the eighth, sealing the combined shutout.
Arnold finished the day 1-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the offense. Falyn Beebe turned in a flawless performance at the plate, going 3-for-3 to pace the Raiders' seven-hit outing.
Tallahassee State showed fight at the plate, tallying five hits from five different players—Laci Prescott, Karmen Christie, Sam Thompson, Aubrey Alonso, and Mallory Collier—while also drawing four walks. However, the Eagles couldn't convert those opportunities into runs.
Alonso pitched admirably for Tallahassee, going the distance with eight innings of work. She allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits, striking out two and walking three.
With the win, Northwest Florida State improves to 51-2 overall and remains unbeaten in conference play at 17-0. The Raiders have now won 35 straight games overall and 32 consecutive conference contests dating back to last season.
Northwest Florida will play its final three games of the regular season over the next two weeks. The Raiders return home this Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup against Gulf Coast, travel to Pensacola on Wednesday, April 23, and wrap up the regular season at home against Chipola on Saturday, April 26.
