Strong Second Half Lifts Northwest Florida Past Pensacola State

NICEVILLE, Fla. — A dominant second-half performance propelled No. 5 Northwest Florida State women's basketball to its first Panhandle Conference victory of the season Saturday afternoon, as the Raiders pulled away for a 65–49 win over Pensacola State inside Raider Arena.

After a tightly contested first half, the Raiders flipped the script over the final 20 minutes, outscoring the Pirates 40–27 behind improved efficiency, defensive pressure, and a decisive fourth quarter run that put the game out of reach.

Northwest Florida carried a narrow 25–22 advantage into halftime after struggling to find an offensive rhythm early. The Raiders shot just 10-of-29 (34.4 percent) from the field over the first two quarters, allowing Pensacola State to hang around despite Northwest Florida's edge on the glass and defensive end.

Pensacola State came out firing to start the game, opening with a pair of three-pointers to jump out to a 6–0 lead. The Raiders answered by tightening up defensively and attacking the paint, with Carrington Jones getting the Raiders on the board at the free-throw line. After falling behind 10–2 midway through the opening quarter, Northwest Florida began to settle in. Jones knocked down a key three-pointer to spark a 9–0 run, giving the Raiders their first lead at 11–10 before closing the quarter ahead 15–14.

The second quarter remained a defensive battle, as neither team led by more than three possessions. Khoudia Diagne provided a major spark off the glass, pulling down offensive rebounds and altering shots in the paint, while Northwest Florida forced multiple turnovers to generate transition opportunities. A late push allowed the Raiders to take a three-point cushion into the break.

Momentum swung firmly in Northwest Florida's favor coming out of halftime. The Raiders opened the third quarter with sharper ball movement and improved shot selection, building a seven-point lead behind balanced scoring. A Jones three-pointer followed by a Diagne finish inside capped a key 9–2 stretch that gave Northwest Florida breathing room. Pensacola State continued to battle and trimmed the margin on several occasions, but the Raiders consistently answered to maintain control and enter the fourth quarter ahead 46–40.

The game was decided early in the final period as Northwest Florida delivered its most decisive stretch of the afternoon. The Raiders opened the quarter on an 11–0 run, fueled by lockdown defense and perimeter shooting. Jadah White took over offensively, going a perfect 4-for-4 from the field — including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc — to score 11 points in the quarter and break the game open. Northwest Florida pushed the lead to as many as 21 points and never looked back.

Jones led all scorers with 19 points and added five rebounds. White finished with 15 points and five rebounds, while Diagne and Niylia Wilkins each chipped in 11 points. Diagne also led the game on the boards with eight rebounds, anchoring a dominant interior effort.

Northwest Florida finished the afternoon shooting 46.4 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from three-point range, while holding Pensacola State to 34.8 percent shooting and just 23.5 percent from deep. The Raiders also controlled the glass, outrebounding the Pirates 36–20.

With the win, Northwest Florida improves to 1–1 in Panhandle Conference play. The Raiders will hit the road Wednesday, Jan. 21, for a marquee matchup at No. 6 Gulf Coast State College, with tipoff set for 5:15 p.m.
