Raiders Lock Down Pensacola in 55–36 Road Win
PENSACOLA, Fla. — Northwest Florida State women's basketball turned in a solid defensive performance Wednesday night, rolling past Pensacola State 55–36 to improve to 4–2 in conference play.
Scoring was at a premium in the opening half, as both teams struggled to find rhythm and shot under 30 percent from the field. Kayla Williams provided a spark for the Raiders early, going a perfect 3-for-3 in the first half with eight points and four rebounds to help Northwest Florida take a 22–16 lead into the break.
The Raiders turned up the intensity after halftime and never looked back, outscoring the Pirates 33–20 over the final two quarters. Pensacola native Niylia Wilkins led the charge offensively in the second half, pouring in 11 of her game-high 13 points during the final 20 minutes.
Williams finished as the Raiders' second-leading scorer with 12 points — a new season high — while adding six rebounds. Carrington Jones anchored the glass, pulling down a game-high eight rebounds as Northwest Florida controlled the paint on both ends of the floor.
As a team, the Raiders shot 38.5 percent from the field, including an efficient 52.2 percent in the second half after opening the game at just 27.6 percent. Pensacola struggled offensively throughout the night, as Northwest Florida held the Pirates to 26.5 percent shooting overall and just 16.7 percent from three-point range.
Turnovers played a key role in the outcome, with the teams combining for 38 miscues. Northwest Florida capitalized on Pensacola's mistakes, converting steals into easy transition buckets. Rebounding was another decisive factor, as the Raiders finished with a plus-14 advantage on the glass, including an eight-rebound edge on the offensive boards, leading to numerous second-chance points.
Up next, Northwest Florida continues its road stretch Saturday with a matchup at No. 1 Chipola in Marianna. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m. The Raiders nearly upset the Indians in their previous meeting last month, falling by four points at home, and will look to even the series and make a push toward the top of the conference standings.
