Northwest Florida Outguns No. 6 Gulf Coast in Top-10 Road Clash, 96–89

PANAMA CITY, Fla. — Wednesday night in Panama City delivered a heavyweight showdown, as two top-10 programs traded punches for a full 40 minutes. In a game that demanded energy, execution, and composure at every turn, No. 4 Northwest Florida State men's basketball proved to have just a little more down the stretch, holding off No. 6 Gulf Coast, 96–89, to improve to 19–2 overall and 2–1 in Panhandle Conference play.

Northwest Florida set the tone early, bursting out of the gates with a 12–4 run. Explosive dunks from Justin Burns and Johnny Pierce ignited the Raiders, while a pair of early three-pointers from leading scorer DJ Shine established what would become a recurring theme on the night. Gulf Coast, however, answered emphatically. Out of the media timeout, the Commodores rattled off a 14–0 run over the next four minutes, flipping the momentum and grabbing an 18–15 lead.

From there, the game turned into a back-and-forth battle. The lead changed hands 16 times and the score was tied on 10 occasions, as both teams showcased their firepower. Three-pointers rained down at both ends, highlight-reel dunks were exchanged, and the intensity spilled over at times, resulting in multiple technical fouls assessed to the Raiders. Despite the chaos, Northwest Florida managed to carry a slim 46–45 advantage into halftime.

The Raiders struck first coming out of the break, as Jonas Nichols buried a three to push the lead to four. Gulf Coast quickly responded, tying the game at 51 and briefly edging ahead. That's when Northwest Florida found another gear. Nichols, Damarion Vann-Kelly, and Shine caught fire from beyond the arc, knocking down four consecutive three-pointers to spark a decisive 12–0 run. The surge gave the Raiders their largest lead of the night at 10 points and momentarily appeared to swing the game in their favor.

Gulf Coast wasn't finished. With 6:31 remaining, the Commodores stormed back, trimming the deficit to 82–77 and putting the pressure squarely back on the Raiders. This time, Northwest Florida responded with defensive intensity and poise. Key stops, smart shot selection, and clutch scoring allowed the Raiders to maintain control in the final minutes, ultimately closing out the win and securing sole possession of first place in the Panhandle Conference standings.

The Raiders' offensive trio of DJ Shine, Damarion Vann-Kelly, and Jonas Nichols was nearly unstoppable. The three combined for 69 points on an efficient 68.0 percent shooting performance and connected on 14 three-pointers. Shine led the way with 25 points in just his second game back from injury, Vann-Kelly added 23—one shy of his career high—and Nichols chipped in 21. As a team, Northwest Florida shot an outstanding 61.8 percent from the field and a scorching 70.0 percent (14-of-20) from beyond the arc, marking a new season high.

Northwest Florida returns home Saturday to host No. 13 Chipola at Raider Arena. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m., as the Raiders look to improve to 3–1 in conference play against an Indians squad coming off a statement win over No. 9 Tallahassee.
