Northwest Florida Softball Season Ends with 3-1 Loss to Odessa at NJCAA World Series
OXFORD, Ala. — Northwest Florida State Softball's remarkable 2026 season came to a close Friday afternoon as the Raiders fell to Odessa College, 3-1, in an elimination game at the NJCAA Division I Softball World Series.
The Raiders struck first in the second inning and carried a lead deep into the game. Haley Hughes delivered a single to put pressure on the defense, and Northwest Florida capitalized on a throwing error to plate the game's first run and take a 1-0 advantage.
That lead held through six innings thanks to another stellar performance from Savannah Carter. The sophomore ace kept the Wranglers off the scoreboard and appeared poised to send the Raiders into the late innings with the lead intact. However, Odessa broke through in the seventh inning. Following a double and a walk, the Wranglers connected on a three-run home run to left field, turning a one-run deficit into a 3-1 lead.
Moments later, weather became a factor. Rain and lightning forced play to be suspended for more than two hours in the middle of the seventh inning.
Once play resumed, Northwest Florida was unable to mount a comeback, going down in order in the bottom of the seventh as its season came to an end.
Hughes led the Raiders offensively, finishing 2-for-3 with the team's lone RBI. Carter was outstanding in the circle, allowing just two baserunners through 6.2 innings before exiting in the seventh. Isabelle Warrick entered in relief and surrendered the decisive three-run homer, with two of the runs charged to Carter.
Northwest Florida closes the year with a 57-7 record, tied for the third-most wins in program history. The Raiders captured their fourth consecutive Panhandle Conference Championship, finished as runners-up at the FCSAA Tournament, and made their fourth straight appearance at the NJCAA World Series.
Friday's game also marked the final chapter for one of the most accomplished sophomore classes in program history. Over the last two seasons, the group compiled a remarkable 119-11 overall record and a dominant 38-2 mark in Panhandle Conference play. Along the way, they won two conference championships, made two NJCAA World Series appearances, and delivered the program's first NJCAA National Championship in 2025.
The departing sophomore class includes Bre Hughes, Haley Hughes, Karson McGowan, Julie Stevens, Anna Grace Griggs, Hailey Henry, AJ Vineski, Mallory Baker, and Falon Beebe— a group whose legacy will stand among the greatest in Northwest Florida softball history.
